About Captain Mark Mitchem
Captain Mark Mitchem, Presiding Officer of the Houston Pilots, is the featured speaker at the March 14, 2019 Commerce Club Luncheon. Mitchem will present a brief overview of the Houston Pilots’ navigation of the Houston Ship Channel and offer a pilot’s perspective of trends and the future outlook of the Ship Channel.
After 14 years at sea, Mitchem joined the Houston Pilots in 1996. Initially working for Marine Transport Lines, he served on both tankers and RoRo vessels and sailed as Master on three different ships engaged in coastwise and worldwide trade. Later, Mitchem worked for the Del Monte Banana Company, serving on their Panamanian flagged vessels. He is a 1982 graduate of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point.
The Houston Pilots, a group of 94 master mariners, have serviced the Houston Ship Channel for the 100 years. Their mission is to “bring the ships in and take the ships out” in the tricky waters of the largest landlocked port in America. The Houston Pilots skillfully perform their job 24/7, rain or shine, with a commitment to safety first.
