Pushing back against “how things are” is, perhaps, one of the greatest challenges we face in life. Shakespeare’s eloquent depiction of the senators’ rebellion against Julius Caesar is one of the most famous examples of individuals deciding to make their own fate.
The port of Houston and the Houston Ship Channel has its own special history in the struggle against preordained impediments. If the port pioneers had been guided solely by the obstacles, namely the shallow depth of Buffalo Bayou, they would have believed an inland port was not “in the stars” for Houston. Determination, innovation, and, perhaps, ambition drove it inland from the sea.
The Houston Ship Channel is facing another obstacle that will impact the area for the next generation – ensuring that funding for the deepening and widening of the channel is expedited. As Cassius urged Brutus, we do not have to be swept along by an unalterable fate of waiting 10 or more years for congress to prioritize funding. Sure, we could do nothing and take our dividends now, then watch as our port becomes slowly more inefficient, driving the market away from us. Or we can muster our collective strengths to understand and agree on an equitable plan to invest some of those dividends now to ensure we remain efficient and competitive into the future.
Bringing the community together for insight and perspective in chopping challenges down to size is one of the primary objectives of the Greater Houston Port Bureau. Our committee work, our robust information distribution, and business events are all aimed at supporting this important role. It is in keeping with the strong tradition of cooperating for success on the Houston Ship Channel, charting our own course through the stars.
With these objectives in mind, I encourage you to consider how you will be involved with the Port Bureau in 2020. I hope you will not only renew membership but expand your involvement through a membership upgrade and increase your participation with us. In one way or another, we are ALL writing the next chapter in port region prosperity. Come by our office for a cup of coffee, and let’s chat about the challenges as well as the many exciting opportunities that lie ahead. Let’s be defined by our quality decisions and commitment to working together to make the stars align in the port region’s favor.
