LyondellBasell to Receive 2024 Legacy Award from San Jacinto College
The San Jacinto College Foundation will honor LyondellBasell with the 2024 Legacy Award at the San Jacinto College and LyondellBasell Hollywood Nights Gala presented by the Sinor Family on Friday, May 17, 2024.
“We are honoring LyondellBasell with this year’s Legacy Award because of their unwavering commitment to San Jacinto College, our students, and programs that support the region’s workforce,” said Teri Crawford, vice chancellor for External Relations at San Jacinto College. “Since 2019, LyondellBasell has been an incredible partner and a champion for education and workforce training, providing scholarships and critical funding that have expanded our petrochemical training capabilities. I can think of no better way to thank LyondellBasell than to present them with the 2024 Legacy Award.”
Each year, LyondellBasell, along with the San Jacinto College Foundation, awards 10 students enrolled in the College’s instrumentation and process technology programs a $2,500 scholarship toward their degree. Since 2020, the company has awarded scholarships to 50 San Jacinto College students. Beyond scholarships, LyondellBasell contributes its support through funding, its people, and its resources.
In 2019, with the grand opening of the Center for Petrochemical, Energy, & Technology ("CPET"), LyondellBasell was revealed as the facility’s naming rights partner, honoring the company’s generous $5 million donation and its support in developing the facility’s curriculum. Several LyondellBasell employees serve on the College’s Curriculum Advisory Committees for multiple CPET programs. These committees help drive curriculum to stay not only current, but they look ahead to what is on the horizon for industry training.
The company also created a scaled model glass distillation lab at the LyondellBasell Center for Petrochemical, Energy, & Technology. The lab was exclusively designed and built by a team of LyondellBasell employees who dedicated 14,000 hours to its construction over two years.
“In addition to their monetary support and lending their employee knowledge, LyondellBasell frequently holds events at the College that benefit the community as a whole,” added Crawford. “This includes a massive tree giveaway in which the company distributed more than 2,500 trees to East Harris County residents while also planting numerous of trees on our San Jacinto College campuses, and a computer giveaway to hundreds of residents in need. They have been a continued supporter of the annual Mindtrekkers Adventures in STEM Festival, and provide support to the Energy Venture Summer Camp, events which introduce students to the energy fields as early as the sixth grade.”
The company’s support of San Jacinto College students also includes monthly lunch and learns, plant tours, virtual interview trainings, resume workshops, and employees who are housed at the LyondellBasell Center for Petrochemical, Energy, & Technology who get to know program students and faculty throughout the year, serving as resources in numerous capacities.
The San Jacinto College and LyondellBasell Hollywood Nights Gala Presented by the Sinor Family is a black-tie affair, hosted by the San Jacinto College Foundation. This year’s event is all about glitz and glam with a Hollywood Nights theme. Guests can expect to interact with San Jacinto College students, bid on silent and live auction items, take a chance in the gift card punch wall, hear from San Jacinto College Promise Scholars, and enjoy delicious food and drinks including a special cookie created by San Jacinto College culinary students. All proceeds from the event are dedicated to the Promise @ San Jac Scholarship, an opportunity for any high school graduate who lives in the San Jacinto College taxing district to earn a certificate or associate degree debt free.
The Promise Scholarship is open to all high school seniors who live in the San Jacinto College taxing district, regardless of GPA and family income. Students must meet deadlines for pledging and applying to San Jac, complete all financial aid documents by the stated deadline, and enroll at the College on time in order receive the scholarship. Students must also enroll full time for the fall semester after high school graduation and complete their certificate or degree within three years. The Promise @ San Jac Scholarship covers the cost of tuition, books, and supplies so that students don’t have to worry about paying for college.
